Builds / Monochord rod module

Status: first article. Not yet printed or assembled; dimensions and steps may change.

Overview

One voice of the monochord: a steel string over a ring fret that a stepper motor moves along a rod.

The whole rod module in a three-quarter view: the beam, the head block with its motor at the left, the orange carriage on the rod in the middle, the tail block with the pickup and tension knob at the right. Dragging the carriage moves the fret ring along the string; the readout gives its position and the semitones above the open string.
Drag the carriage; the readout shows semitones above the open string.

Assembly

  1. 1 Tail block on the bench

The tail block on the bench: the pickup comes down into its bay and the endstop board up into its pocket; the idler sled goes down through the idler well into its pocket; the knob and its screw come in through the end wall and turn a few turns into the nyloc; the idler pulley goes down onto its shaft.

    Tools

    • 2.5 mm hex key

    Steps

  2. 2 Head block on the bench

The head block on the bench: the tuner comes up from below, its button in from the side, washer and bushing down from the top; the motor comes up from below and four short screws go down through the pulley well into its face; the pulley, drawn see-through, goes on last.

    Parts

    Tools

    • 2.5 mm hex key

    Steps

  3. 3 Carriage round the ring

The carriage apart: the bushing comes in along the rod axis through the ring, the keel from below, the body from above, four screws from below; the body is 44.0 mm wide; ring 1 marks the ring's slot.

    Parts

    Tools

    • 2.5 mm hex key

    Steps

  4. 4 Head block onto the beam

The head block comes down over the beam end; ring 1 marks the hook leg on the beam's cut face; flat round head screws go into the cheeks from the side.

    Parts

    Tools

    • 4 mm hex key
    • 3 mm hex key

    Steps

  5. 5 Rod and tail block

The 450.0 mm rod slides through the carriage into the head socket; the tail block slides on along the beam until its socket floor meets the rod end, marked 1.

    Parts

    Tools

    • 4 mm hex key
    • 3 mm hex key

    Steps

  6. 6 Belt round the pulleys

    Parts

    Tools

    • Flush cutters

    Steps

  7. 7 Tension by ear

The module with the carriage at the tension position; a ring on the drive run halfway between the head block and the carriage marks where to pluck, 49 Hz; view 1 is cut through the tension screw: turning the knob clockwise pulls the idler sled toward the tail.

    Tools

    • Phone tuner

    Steps

  8. 8 Caps and string

The caps slide in from the side along their dovetails, the ball end goes into the anchor, and the string runs 571.5 mm from nut to bridge.
